National Quilting Day is Saturday, March 18th. The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991 and since then it has grown into a global celebration for all quilt lovers and makers. And to celebrate this National Quilt Day on Saturday at the store, when you purchase a non-sale precut fat quarter(s), a second similar fat quarter for half price. Woo hoo!
This year at the store we are will be having several Full Moon Events. Did you know that Full Moon names date back to the Native Americans of North America. Tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Full Moon names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.
There was some variation in the Full Moon names, but in general, the same ones were consistent among regional tribes. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. According to the Farmer’s Almanac there are going to be 13 Full Moons during 2023.
Our first Full Moon event will be in April – “Full Pink Moon”. The Farmer’s Almanac states this name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
The name “Pink Moon” has long been associated with April’s full Moon as flowers begin to bloom, particularly moss pink or creeping ground phlox, which is on of the earliest and most widespread spring flowers.
The full “Pink Moon” date is Thursday, April 6th and we are going to honor this astronomical event all week starting Thursday April 6th – Saturday April 8th.
